Practicing yoga can be potent part of supporting your physical health and mental well-being. But what about those times that you just can’t make it to the studio? When you’re juggling kids, work, and social obligations, getting to a group yoga class may not be possible.
By adding a home yoga practice to your self-care toolbox, you can bring the benefits of yoga into your life – just when you need them and at your convenience. Here are five tips to help you create a home yoga practice and get on the fast track to better health.
1. Create a yoga practice space.
Your yoga practice space doesn’t have to be fancy. (My designated practice space when I’m travelling to visit my family is my sister’s living room floor!) But designating a particular for your practice can help motivate you to actually unroll your mat. If you are creating a practice area in your home, consider adding a simple item or two to make it feel special. Placing a nice candle or some props nearby can inspire you to take time to practice.
2. Use what you got!
You don’t need fancy props or equipment to practice yoga. In fact, you don’t even need a yoga mat! Easily accessible household items like books, towels, and pillows can easily take the place of yoga studio props. Have a few of these items on hand when you practice and you’ll have everything that you need.
3. Schedule it in.
When we’re busy and feel stressed, it’s easy to let other tasks and obligations get in the way of our practice time. Scheduling time in your calendar can help you remember that your self-care needs to be a priority, too! Add a 15-45 minute yoga practice “appointment” to help you keep your commitment to your health and well-being. Once you get on the mat and take a few deep breaths, you may discover that those other stressors no longer feel quite so urgent.
4. Embrace the micropractice
We sometimes think that our yoga practice needs to be long in order to be worth it. Not so, yogis! I’m a huge fan of the “micro-practice,” where you fit a 2-5 minute practice into the fabric of your day. While it would be decadent to have an hour to devote to practice, doing even a few quick poses can reset your mindset and restore your sense of well-being. Try it out! Commit to a two minute yoga practice (yes, two minutes) every day for the next week and see how you feel.
5. Practice with friends.
Just because you’re practicing at home doesn’t mean that you have to go it alone! With so many amazing online yoga classes to choose from, you never need to practice solo. Turn on your YYOGA At Home and choose from an array of practices with your favorite teachers. Search for a practice and class length that suits your needs and jump right in. Joining an online class community like YYOGA at Home is a little like having your own self-care team right at your fingertips.
Finally, remember that there is no “right way” to do a home practice; the beauty of practicing at home is that it can fit into your lifestyle and support your unique needs. Whether you do a 15-minute flow to wake up in the morning, a 5-minute practice at your desk to reset midday, or indulge in a sweet hour long yin practice before sleep, your home yoga practice will become a powerful and versatile tool to support your physical and mental health.
